My Author Manifesto

Being a writer is the most personal connection I can make with myself. It’s understanding who I am as a person because through the characters I develop, with their individual personalities and choices they make, I learn more about who I am and how I fit into the world. Where else can I so easily take my experience, my inner turmoil, happiness or anger and shape an entire world that, in turn, has the potential to change the human condition of my readers?

The story is the process. To be a writer, I must embrace the ingredients of the story and use them wisely to best create the richest possible experience for every reader. I can’t just tell the events, I have to let the reader experience it for themselves through every sense they have. They need to relate to the sights, smells, textures, sounds and flavours of every place I bring them to. They need to feel something for my characters be it love, respect, or hate.

I believe, for those with the will to craft, writing can be nurtured as I have nurtured it and I withhold no information about my process and the possibilities that are within the reach of all those with a story to tell. Writers have questions about how to write and the most important is how to get their work into the hands of readers. There are options for everybody in this new age of technology and changing times. It is far easier to publish a book than it ever has been. But there are still aspects to be wary of.

My life has almost always been surrounded by those who believe I am a small town person who has always been less than they are. I could never amount to anything of great worth. But I came to realize I don’t need to. I just need to write stuff that can make a difference. And that, to me, is all the worth I need.
